About Herman Miller

Herman Miller is an American furniture company based in Zeeland, Michigan, and has been known by that name since 1923. It became famous for modern design through collaborations with designers such as Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson, and it brought ergonomic research to office seating with chairs like the Ergon, Equa and, in 1994, the Aeron. Herman Miller is now part of MillerKnoll, which also owns Knoll.

Its chairs are known for three things: research-driven ergonomics, distinctive suspension materials and long warranties. Most of its major task chairs carry a 12-year warranty and are rated for round-the-clock use.

1. Herman Miller Aeron: Best Overall

#1Best Overall$$$$ · Premium

Herman Miller Aeron

  • Seat: 8Z Pellicle mesh
  • Arms: Height, depth, pivot
  • Lumbar: PostureFit SL (height + depth)

The Aeron is the chair that defined the modern ergonomic office chair, and the current Remastered version is still our overall #1 pick. Its 8Z Pellicle mesh seat and back keep you cool, PostureFit SL supports your pelvis and lumbar curve so you sit tall without effort, and three sizes (A, B and C) let it fit a wide range of bodies. Its main limitation is that it does not come with a headrest from Herman Miller. Read our full Aeron review.

  • Choose it if: you sit all day, run warm or want help sitting upright.
  • Skip it if: you want a soft, padded seat.

2. Herman Miller Embody: Best for Long Sessions

#2Best for Long Hours$$$$ · Premium

Herman Miller Embody

  • Seat: Pixelated 4-layer seat
  • Arms: Height, width
  • Lumbar: Passive (BackFit angle)

The Embody's pixelated seat and backrest spread pressure across your body, and its narrow back leaves your shoulders free to move. It is designed for people who sit for very long stretches and shift often, which is why it is a favorite of gamers and programmers. Its back support adapts automatically rather than offering a lumbar knob. Read our Embody review.

  • Choose it if: you sit marathon sessions and move constantly.
  • Skip it if: you are above 300 pounds or want targeted lumbar pressure.

3. Herman Miller Mirra 2: Best Value Herman Miller

#3Best Herman Miller Value$$$ · Premium

Herman Miller Mirra 2

  • Seat: Suspension seat with FlexFront
  • Arms: Fully adjustable (4D)
  • Lumbar: Adjustable pad

The Mirra 2 delivers Herman Miller design and warranty for noticeably less than the Aeron or Embody. Its suspension seat with FlexFront edge, choice of TriFlex or Butterfly back, adjustable lumbar and well-tuned recline make it one of the best all-rounders in the lineup. Read our Mirra 2 review.

  • Choose it if: you want Herman Miller quality on a tighter budget.
  • Skip it if: you need sizing options for an unusually tall or broad frame.

4. Herman Miller Cosm: Best Zero-Setup Chair

#4Best Zero-Setup Chair$$$$ · Premium

Herman Miller Cosm

  • Seat: Intercept suspension
  • Arms: Height-adjustable (model dependent)
  • Lumbar: Passive

The Cosm has almost no controls. Its Auto-Harmonic Tilt adjusts recline to your body automatically, and its seamless Intercept suspension flexes to support you. It comes in three back heights and is ideal for shared spaces or anyone who hates levers. Read our Cosm review.

5. Herman Miller Sayl: Best for Design-Led Home Offices

#5Most Stylish Herman Miller$$$ · Premium

Herman Miller Sayl

  • Seat: Foam seat, unframed elastomer back
  • Arms: Fixed, height or fully adjustable (by configuration)
  • Lumbar: Optional adjustable lumbar

The Sayl's unframed, bridge-inspired back is the most distinctive look in the lineup, and its padded seat feels familiar. It is one of the most affordable Herman Miller task chairs, but you need to choose the configuration with adjustable arms, seat depth and lumbar to get the best from it. Read our Sayl review.

How to Choose a Herman Miller Chair

Sizing

The Aeron is the only Herman Miller chair here offered in three sizes. Size B fits most people; Size A suits smaller frames and Size C suits taller and broader people. The other chairs come in one size, though the Cosm offers three back heights.

Mesh, Suspension or Foam

Herman Miller is known for suspension materials that breathe and flex, but the Sayl's foam seat suits people who prefer a cushioned feel. See our guide to mesh vs. fabric office chairs.

Lumbar Support

The Aeron's PostureFit SL supports the pelvis and lower back. The Mirra 2 and Sayl offer optional adjustable lumbar. The Embody and Cosm adapt automatically. Learn more in our lumbar support guide.

Configuration

Herman Miller chairs are sold in many configurations. Arm adjustments, lumbar options and tilt features can vary between listings, so read the listing carefully before buying.

Buying New vs. Remanufactured

Remanufactured Herman Miller chairs are widely available. They can save money, but their warranty usually comes from the remanufacturer. Buying new from an authorized seller keeps Herman Miller's 12-year warranty.

Herman Miller vs. Other Brands

Herman Miller's closest rival is Steelcase, which tends to offer padded seats, more manual adjustment and higher weight ratings. Read our full Herman Miller vs. Steelcase comparison, browse Steelcase chairs, or see our Herman Miller alternatives.

Are Herman Miller Chairs Worth It?

For people who sit many hours a day, usually yes. Their long warranties and durability mean the cost per year of use is often lower than repeatedly replacing cheaper chairs. Read our analysis in are expensive office chairs worth it?

Herman Miller Chairs by Use

Full-Time Desk Work

The Aeron is our first recommendation, with the Mirra 2 as the value alternative. Both support upright work well and keep you cool.

Gaming and Long Sessions

The Embody's pressure distribution and movement-friendly back make it the best Herman Miller for marathon sessions. Herman Miller also sells a gaming edition developed with Logitech G. See our best office chairs for gaming.

Shared Desks

The Cosm adjusts itself to each sitter, so it suits offices where several people use one chair.

Home Offices Where Looks Matter

The Sayl and Cosm have the most home-friendly designs and come in more colors.

Lower-Back Support

The Aeron's PostureFit SL is the strongest lower-back support in the lineup. Read our guide to office chairs for back pain.

Other Herman Miller Chairs

Herman Miller makes several other task chairs, including the Lino, Verus, Setu and Asari, along with the Vantum gaming chair. Some are sold mainly through Herman Miller and its dealers rather than Amazon. We focus here on the models most widely available and most often recommended for full-time desk work.

Herman Miller Warranty Explained

Most Herman Miller task chairs carry a 12-year warranty covering parts and, for many models, round-the-clock use. Coverage on certain components such as upholstery can be shorter, and terms depend on where you buy. To keep the full warranty, buy new from Herman Miller or an authorized seller and keep your proof of purchase. If something fails, the warranty typically covers replacement parts.
